yacht spotting: the attessa
A couple of weeks ago, I was lucky enough to be on a large cruise ship for the night China participated in the Celebration of Light fireworks competition. Our friends at Sun Microsystems have an annual cruise, lovely dinner, and a night on the water to watch the fireworks from the front row. It was quite the spread, complete with open bar (woo-hoo). Oh, and Tim Bray was there too.
As we skimmed across the water of English Bay, we came upon a luxury yacht that looked to be about 200ft in length (winds up being 225ft). It was quite the sight.

"Holy smokes... look at that boat!"
"Woah, I wonder who's boat that is."
"Is that Paul Allen's boat?"
"No, I think it belongs to some crazy Russian billionaire..."
"Is that the guy that was going to buy the Canucks?"
And so on.
As we pulled close, we could make out the name on the side: Attessa. We could also see a fair size silver helicopter on the back too. And some sharp looking staff, waiting to serve martinis no doubt.

A bit of googling the other day and I found out a bit more on the Attessa. It's not owned by a Russian billionaire, but in fact Dennis Washington. From an article found on the MyTelus.com website:
And why was it being refitted? Because before it was the Attessa, it was the Aviva and according to the nautical website "The Triton" it suffered one of the most expensive fires in luxury yacht history.
Well, it's back on the water and cruising around English Bay (and other locales). So for all of you yacht-spotters out there, look for it and its sharp paint job.
Some more Attessa links:
I wonder how much it costs to fill 'er up with gas?

Fresh off an 18-month refit at a Vancouver shipyard, Attessa is owned by Montana industrialist Dennis Washington, no stranger to these parts as he owns Seaspan and was the guy who bought the ill-fated "fastcat" ferries.

Attessa III was at anchor in Long Beach yesterday and since the helicopter left late yesterday afternoon it is presumably still there if there are any keen yacht spotters want to cast their eyes over it.
Looked beautiful and drew the eye whichever direction you looked at it from. I'm suitably jealous... ;o)

Just took a ride on bike path in Long Beach. Attessa is still there and had a nice chat with some of the crew. What a beauty. Happy Thanksgiving

The Attessa is currently inside the Alamitos Bay Marina, getting fuel. She takes up the entire dock!! What a Yacht. The crew are all very friendly, and eager to answer questions about the Yacht. They said they are heading to Mexico, then through the Panama Canal enroute to France... Must be nice.

She was tied up overnight on Friday at the Alamitos Bay fuel dock. I had pretty good view from my Carver 42, "Estrellita", on Gangway 12, but took the tender over to get a closer look. Glad she's gone now. I was developing an inferiority complex. Just kidding. Whatta boat!

Great website
We were recently sailing from Split to Dubrovnik and the amazing Attessa was moored just outside Hvar Harbour
At night it gloriously illuminated the surrounding waters and during the day sttod out particulairly from the chopper on the back
A phenomenal boat, and thanks for the great website, I hope to hear the Attessa and Mr Washingtons future travels and exploits
BTW I too live some of the time in Vancouver, it was so coincidental when I learned that it was fitted there
Cheers

She is tied up in the inner harbour of Victoria, BC today (June 1, 2007), quite impressive yacht
By
Anonymous, at 8:02 AM
June 1 2007 Attessa caused quite a commotion here in Victoria today. I had spotted her earlier in the day on a bike ride into town and had to go back for a closer look. Hubby says he remembers her when she was here in 2005. At ~7:30 pm while oohing and ahhing over her we noticed the matching tender boat bringing in the owner. We theorized he had just gotten off a harbour float plane - maybe visiting his son and/or had business dealings in Vancouver for the day. Such a beautiful boat!
We talked to one of the crew after they tied up the tender. He filled in a few blanks for us :
1. The flag she flies is from the Grand Cayman Islands where she's registered
2. They tow the ~40 ft. tender behind the ship
3. Spent 1 year on the way to the Mediterranean, summered there, and 1 year to get back to BC
4. While the crew member politely declined naming the owner we googled to discover he's a Montana multi billionaire Dennis Washington who does a lot of business out of Vancouver RE: tug boats, cargo boats, etc.
5. Mr. Washington doesn't fly that pretty little helicopter himself but has someone on board who does that for him
6. 2 panels on either side of the bow of the boat actually open outward and there are 2 26 ft. speedboats inside that can be lowered by crane
7. There are 2 hot tubs on board - one at the very stern.
8. Googled information - built in 1999, originally named the Aviva, had a disastrous fire 2 years later, sat in harbour for 2 years until brought to Vancouver for a complete refit, 20 ft added on to make it 225 ft in total
8. The crew member we spoke to admitted it's quite a nice job to have :-)
It's funny how this one blog entry became such a phenomenon! Thought I would just keep adding the info for those interested. I think we all dream about what it would be like to own such a beautiful boat. Completely out of reach for the majority of us - but dreaming about it 'don't cost a thing'.
Cheers!

Attessa is docked in Victoria B.C. in front of the Empress and Parliment Buildings. Trully amazing to see her up close and personal...A celebrity of the seas indeed. (June-2-07)

And she's home. Close to 2 years since I first made this blog post and a couple of months after I updated it about the half-way-around-the-world voyage of the Attessa, I saw it today, parked at the Washington ship yards in North Vancouver, hidden behind a fast ferry, as I flew out to Victoria. No camera, but I think it might be worthwhile trying to get a picture for the update. So as of June 19, 2007, she's back in Vancouver BC. Thanks to the people who updated this post for the last 2 years. Quite a trip.

The big ship Attessa is right out our front window here in the tranquil waters of Deep Cove, North Vancouver. She is a magnificent ship, a real beauty. She's been here a since yesterday.
